Projects Update: Pitch Perfect, Drinking Buddies, Captain America Rumor

Pitch Perfect

Pitch Perfect has been getting lots of great reviews, especially on Anna’s behalf! I’ve updated a previous Pitch Perfect post with lots of new clips, including an awesome behind the scenes look at the cast singing Nicki Minaj Starships, and more! Here is a new HQ still:

Drinking Buddies

Anna reveals details on her improv movie “Drinking Buddies”

When it was revealed earlier this year that divisive indie stalwart Joe Swanberg had cast Oscar-nominee Anna Kendrick as well as Olivia Wilde, Ron Livingston and Jake M. Johnson to star in his upcoming dramedy “Drinking Buddies,” anyone familiar with his output probably did a double-take. “Something fails to compute,” wrote our very own Eric Kohn in his own critical take on the news.

So when we got a chance to sit down with Kendrick in Toronto — there to promote her found-footage police thriller “End of Watch” (out this Friday) — naturally we grilled her to learn if “Drinking Buddies” in fact marks a big departure for the ‘mumblecore’ auteur, or if we’re all getting bent out of shape for naught.

“I think he totally sold out, don’t get me wrong,” Kendrick joked. “I’m not the lead,” she continued, “I’m a lead. It’s a four person piece, like a little chamber play. I guess because of that it’s unclear to me who’s movie it is. But there’s nothing traditional about the way that Joe does things.”

For one, Kendrick stressed that the whole film was improvised, and that she “never got one piece of paper — never once.”

“I think the most we got into the structure of the story was a conversation I had with Joe for about an hour on the phone,” Kendrick said. “But half of that time was talking just about the character and what the filming process was going to be. Somewhere in that hour he told me more or less what the outline was. But that was as close I ever got to knowing what the hell was ever going on. You show up and he just sort of says, ‘This is what this scene is about. Have at it!’”

And as for the sex quotient in “Drinking Buddies” (Swanberg has in the past featured a lot of it), Kendrick said that she for one doesn’t have any in the film. That’s not to say there isn’t any. “To be perfectly honest there’s a possibility that there’s a sex scene that I don’t know about,” she said. “I remember one day somebody talking about shooting in the park, and I was like, ‘Oh, what did you shoot in the park?.’ But then I said, ‘You know what, don’t tell me.’ I don’t want to know! Maybe there’s an orgy that I’m not involved in.”

Kendrick said “Drinking Buddies” recently wrapped principal photography, so expect to likely see it in theaters sometime next year (it’s without a distributor for now). Swanberg will next be in theaters with the anthology horror film “V/H/S,” which opens October 5th and is currently available on VOD.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Anna Kendrick’s Lips Are Sealed On ‘Captain America’

Will Anna Kendrick be Marvel’s next leading lady? It’s an entirely possible outcome, considering that her name was mentioned as one of three alleged front-runners for a new role in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” about a month ago. (Imogen Poots and Felicity Jones were the other two names to crop up for the part.)

Since that initial report, we’ve heard approximately zilch. Now, after an interview MTV News had with Kendrick at the Toronto International Film Festival (where she was supporting her new cop drama “End of Watch,” out today), we have a little more to add — specifically, that she’s not talking about it.

“Oh, right. Damn it,” she responded when we started asking her to weigh in on the recent rumors of her superhero involvement. “No. I’m going to say I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Asked if she at least finds herself intrigued by the superhero genre, Kendrick replied diplomatically, “Certainly. Certainly.” A beat later, when it was clear she was not budging on the topic, she cheerfully apologized, “Sorry, bro!”

No need to apologize, Anna. Just get your S.H.I.E.L.D. clearance approved, and then we’ll talk details. {mtv.com)

Anna Kendrick Reveals Taco Bell Obsession on ‘Conan’

Anna Kendrick has confessed — she loves Taco Bell.

The 27-year-old actress, who stars in the upcoming End of Watch and Pitch Perfect, stopped by Conan for a chat and when asked about her tweets about Taco Bell, confessed everything.

“I love Taco Bell,” Anna shared, explaining, “It’s a secret…It’s a dirty thing that I love Taco Bell so much. I can not, can not eat Taco Bell before Midnight. It’s like a reverse Gremlins thing.”

She continued, “It’s just so filthy that I can’t do it. It has to be under cover of darkness in my car. I drive out of my way for the one with the drive-thru so I don’t have to go inside and I’ll just eat it in my car.”

“This is my cry for help,” Anna joked with the host. {justjaredjr.com}

Pitch Perfect – New Release Date & Clips

Pitch Perfect has pushed up its release date, and it will now be opening September 28th :D! There is also a new clips featuring Anna, “Nodes”, and a hilarious MTV promo lip dub of Nicki Minaj Starships:

Universal Platforms Crowd-Pleaser ‘Pitch Perfect’ September 28

Universal Pictures will move up from an October 5 release date on Pitch Perfect and try to build word of mouth by platforming the picture in select theaters across North America on Friday, September 28. Studio and Gold Circle Films did this after strong feedback from early screenings that have already been held and which elicited high amounts of social media traffic — 90% of it positive according to monitoring company Fizziology. While major studios usually move like battleships (no pun intended) and don’t veer from wide-release plans, the feeling was that there was buzz to be built here.

I’m assured the studio isn’t dipping its toe in the water with an option to pull back on the original screen commitment if audiences yawn during the platform. Anna Kendrick stars as a young Barden University student who bonds with a group of girls with the same passion: singing. When she takes this a cappella singing group out of their world of traditional arrangements and perfect harmonies into all-new mash-ups, they fight to climb their way to the top of the cutthroat world of college music competitions. This could wind up either the coolest thing they’ll ever do or the most insane, and it will probably be a little of both. The film’s directed by Jason Moore, best known for Broadway’s Avenue Q.

“You have to be willing to break the rules for a film that you deeply love, and supporting Pitch Perfect in this unorthodox way is a result of our passion for the movie and confidence in its reception,” Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco said. “After every screening, we’ve seen levels of reaction similar to how audiences responded to American Pie and Bring It On, other comedies for a young audience that grew into great success stories for Universal.” {deadline.com}

Pitch Perfect Featurette

New Featurette from Pitch Perfect with Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow & Rebel Wilson

Oscar-nominee Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air) returns to the big screen this autumn in Pitch Perfect, which promises to be the best musical-comedy of the year.

The first trailer debuted earlier this summer, giving us a great impression of a film not taking itself too seriously, and just having fun with the music – exactly what musical-comedies should be doing, in my books – and now Apple have debuted a new featurette, giving us A Look Inside.

“Beca is that girl who’d rather listen to what’s coming out of her headphones than what’s coming out of you. Arriving at her new college, she finds herself not right for any clique but somehow is muscled into one that she never would have picked on her own: alongside mean girls, sweet girls and weird girls whose only thing in common is how good they sound when they sing together.

When Beca takes this acoustic singing group out of their world of traditional arrangements and perfect harmonies into all-new mash-ups, they fight to climb their way to the top of the cutthroat world of college “a cappella.” This could wind up either the coolest thing they’ll ever do or the most insane, and it will probably be a little of both.”

Starring alongside Kendrick in the lead will be a great supporting cast, headed up by Brittany Snow (John Tucker Must Die), Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids), Alexis Knapp (Project X), Adam DeVine (Workaholics), and John Michael Higgins (Yes Man), with the excellent Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games) producing, who makes a nice appearance here behind the scenes.

Avenue Q’s John Moore (One Tree Hill) makes his feature directorial debut, with a script from Kay Cannon (30 Rock), adapting Mickey Rapkin’s original book.

Pitch Perfect will be hitting theatres in the US on 5th October, followed by a UK release on 19th October. I can’t wait. In the meantime, enjoy this new featurette. (I’m still loving the mini a cappella version of David Guetta’s Titanium (feat. Sia).) {heyuguys.co.uk}

END OF WATCHI found a new HQ still of Anna and on-screen beau Jake Gyllenhaal. The red band and international trailer have also recently been released.

THE COMPANY YOU KEEP
Sony Pictures Classics has announced it will release The Company You Keep, starring Anna and Shia Lebeauf:

Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they have acquired all US Rights to Robert Redford’s The Company You Keep. Redford, who directed and produced the film, also stars alongside Shia LaBeouf, Julie Christie, Sam Elliott, Brendan Gleeson, Terence Howard, Richard Jenkins, Anna Kendrick, Brit Marling, Stanley Tucci, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, and Susan Sarandon. Additional producers include Nicolas Chartier (The Hurt Locker), and Bill Holderman (The Conspirator).

Redford also worked on the film with Director of Photography Adriano Goldman (Jane Eyre, Sin Nombre), Composer Cliff Martinez (Drive, Traffic), Editor Mark Day (“Harry Potter” films) and Production Designer Laurence Bennett (The Artist, Crash).

A thriller centered on a former Weather Underground activist who goes on the run from a journalist who has discovered his identity, The Company You Keep will premiere Out of Competition at the Venice Film Festival and at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The Company You Keep was financed by Voltage Pictures, who is also the international sales agent on the film.

“Robert Redford’s film is classic storytelling at its best and we are really looking forward to bringing the film to the American audience,” states Sony Pictures Classics.

“I’ve known Tom and Michael for many years. I have great respect for what they do and how they do it. So it’s a pleasant connection,” adds Redford. {comingsoon.net}
