This Week’s Cover: The Bellas are back in ‘Pitch Perfect 2′
SPOILER ALERT: The Barden Bellas have split up.
But before you scream “A ca-scuse me?!” it’s just a temporary separation. On this muggy June day in Baton Rouge, La., the cast of Pitch Perfect 2, the sequel to Universal’s sleeper about a college a cappella group, is pulling double duty. Rebel Wilson (returning as blunt bombshell Fat Amy) and Brittany Snow (back as dim bulb Chloe) are cloistered in the production offices, recording and preparing for dance rehearsal.
Meanwhile, a few miles away, Anna Kendrick and Skylar Astin, reprising their roles as vocal power couple Beca and Jesse, are shooting Beca’s first day of work as an intern at a recording company. “Any first-day jitters?” Jesse asks. “No,” Beca responds. “I’m just going to be moody and distant—artists love that, right?” If anyone has slight jitters, it’s the woman behind the camera: actress Elizabeth Banks (the Hunger Games franchise), who produced the original and appeared in a small role as sassy judge Gail. She’s now making her feature-directing debut. “This is the stupidest idea I’ve ever had,” she jokes during a break in shooting. “My first movie is this huge studio movie that a lot of people care about that also happens to be a musical with massive dance numbers. I don’t know what I was thinking.”
But Pitch Perfect is all about defying the odds. Released in September 2012, the original movie, directed by Jason Moore (Avenue Q) and written by Kay Cannon (30 Rock), focused on a ragtag a cappella group at a Southern college and their surly but sensational new recruit, Beca. The film earned solid reviews and grossed $65 million in the U.S. “It was pretty modest,” Banks says. “But it engendered a lot of love. That’s what we could not have foreseen.” The other surprise was its success on DVD and a platinum-selling soundtrack, boosted by Kendrick’s “Cups” single. ” Pitch performed on DVD like a movie that did at least twice what its theatrical business was,” says Peter Cramer, Universal’s co-president of production. All of which fast-tracked the sequel. “It went from ‘Boy, it would be great to do this!’ to ‘We must do this!’ ”
The little comedy that could is now striving for franchise status. Pitch Perfect 2 will swing into theaters on May 15, 2015, facing off against some of the biggest guns of the summer. (Avengers: Age of Ultron opens two weeks earlier.) “The first film flew under the radar, and it was a gift,” says Banks. “This time around, much higher stakes.” And the studio knows it. “Everybody is much more involved,” she adds. “As the saying goes, ‘Success has many fathers.’ ” popwatch.ew.com/
What Had Anna Kendrick Terrified While Filming Pitch Perfect 2?
Someone’s afraid of heights!
Anna Kendrick, 29, who stars as an irresponsible sister in the dramedy Happy Christmas, revealed what had her shaking while filming Pitch Perfect 2 when she chatted with PEOPLE this week about “one last thing” …
It’s been a while, because I usually avoid the sun like the plague. But I went on vacation to Mexico with my friend Aubrey Plaza, and I was under a hat and umbrella all day so I didn’t put sunscreen on. I went in the ocean for 10 minutes and got a super-painful sunburn on my face.
Last time I was nervous
Without spoiling anything, there is a point [in Pitch Perfect 2] when I am at a great height and have to jump, and it was actually totally terrifying and took me like three takes to even jump. Even thinking about it right now makes my stomach turn.
Last compliment I got
I feel like somebody told me I had nice skin at the grocery store the other day, which was really nice. But I don’t know if it was an old Gypsy woman who put a curse on me, because I’m immediately having a massive breakout.
Last thing I cooked
I had some of the girls over for Game of Thrones night, and I did a little chocolate and white chocolate fondue and some spanakopita and mini quiches.
Ready for another cup? ‘Pitch Perfect 2′ stars spill on sequel
Good news for fans who missed them when they were gone: In next year’s “Pitch Perfect 2,” the Barden Bellas once again will raise their voices in glorious a cappella harmony. And the stars of the highly anticipated sequel dished — well, a little, anyway — about the film’s plot in a behind-the-scenes chat with TODAY Monday.
“The Bellas have a new main rival this time around,” director/star Elizabeth Banks told TODAY’s Natalie Morales. “They’ve gotten too big for their britches, possibly literally. And they’ve sort of forgotten about the music a little bit.”
Co-star Rebel Wilson joked that the sequel will have more stunts. “That bit when you’re dangling from the helicopter…” Wilson said in a teasing voice, looking at returning co-star Anna Kendrick. Gesturing toward cast newcomer Hailee Steinfeld, Wilson added, “That bit with the shark, it really is her.”
One thing is clear: “Pitch Perfect 2” will have plenty of elaborate choreography. Morales got a firsthand look at the moves.
“Pitch Perfect 2” hits theaters May 15, 2015.
Anna has been cast in upcoming movie ‘The Hollars’. The Hollars will be directed by John Krasinski, who will also star as the lead, John Hollar. Anna will play John’s girlfriend in the comedy, about an aspiring NYC artist who takes his girlfriend back to his Middle America hometown on the eve of his mother’s brain surgery.
The Office alum John Krasinski has lined up The Hollars as his next directing effort after helming his first feature, 2009′s Brief Interviews with Hideous Men — and he has enlisted Anna Kendrick, Richard Jenkins, and Margo Martindale to join him. Krasinski also will star in the lead as John Hollar, an aspiring NYC artist who takes his girlfriend (Kendrick) back to his Middle America hometown on the eve of his mother’s (Martindale) brain surgery. There he’s forced to navigate the crazy life he left behind as his dysfunctional family, high school pals, his father (Jenkins), and his over-eager ex flood back into his life ahead of the operation.
The pic is produced by Krasinski’s Sunday Night banner and scripted by James C. Strouse in what’s described as a blend of Steel Magnolias and Garden State. Tom Rice and Ben Nearn are producing for Sycamore Pictures, which recently produced The Way Way Back and Begin Again. Groundswell’s Michael London is also a producer. Sunday Night’s Allyson Seeger is exec producing alongside Strouse and Groundswell’s Janice Williams. Panorama is handling international sales and will put the project in front of buyers at Cannes. WME is handling domestic sales and reps Krasinski, who is also repped by attorney James Adams. Strouse is repped by ICM Partners. Jenkins and Martindale are repped by Gersh; CAA reps Kendrick. deadline.com
In other upcoming movie news, Anna’s third movie directed by Joe Swanberg, which was under wraps for a while, has now been revealed. The title is ‘Digging for Fire’, it will also star Orlando Bloom, Brie Larson, and Sam Rockwell, and there will be lots of drinking involved! Anna has a smaller role in the film. More info here. And Pitch Perfect 2 has cast Hailee Steinfeld, who Anna ran into at the Met gala, and posted a pic on her instagram. Aw!
