Exclusive Excerpt: Cover Girl Anna Kendrick’s December Interview

With eight new movies, including this month’s musical film Into the Woods, Anna Kendrick exhibits her remarkable range (literally). Not only is she immensely watchable, but she’s also immensely retweetable as a wicked-smart wit who calls it as she sees it. Here, a preview of her profile from the December 2014 issue of Marie Claire.

Anna Kendrick has a recurring dream in which she is kicking ass. “Like, really physically kicking, and throwing punches and doing karate moves and breaking things,” she tells me. “Which I could never actually pull off in real life because I’m so small.” She pulls aside the strap of her tank top to flex a slender bicep that, admittedly, looks more Olive Oyl than Popeye. “Ol’ McSpaghetti arms,” she says ruefully.

We’re sitting in the back of an SUV in traffic, an hour late for our dinner reservation and tipsy enough from the bartending class we’d taken at the Varnish, a speakeasy-ish bar in downtown L.A., that I feel comfortable delving into Kendrick’s inner psyche. She doesn’t know whom she’s beating up in the dream, but whenever she has it, she wakes feeling awesome and powerful. Which is way better than when she has her other recurring dream, in which some family member has died. “Those are just, ugh,” she says, punching her gut. “I end up carrying that sadness the whole day.”

If, as Freud said, one can understand a person by the visions they conjure while sleeping, then he might have looked at the things rattling around in Kendrick’s psyche and deduced—well, who knows. But at this moment, slightly buzzed and charmed by this 5’2″ actress who drops “fuck” every other word, whose eyes nearly well up as she talks about her family, I’m inclined to think that the combination of personality traits revealed by her dreams—tough girl with a vulnerable streak—is one of the reasons she has been kicking metaphorical ass in Hollywood.

On her role as Cinderella in Into the Woods: “The character is thoughtful and complicated. You see what happens after she marries the prince, when you start to face problems in seemingly perfect situations. The interesting thing about her is she overthinks things, she’s uncertain – we don’t see that in most versions. In a lot of ways, I think it’s this incredibly brave story. She’s neglected and abused her entire life she finally gets love and it’s not the kind of love she was looking for, and she stands up for herself.”

On taking a short break: “The whole going-movie-to-movie-to-movie thing, I’ve been living that way for three years. Like I need to be a person and, you know, maintain relationships.”

On insta-fame following her 2010 Oscar nomination: “It was insane. Like really groovy and exciting. [But] there was a lot of ‘Why me?’—that sort of thing.”

On the celebrity hacking scandal this fall: “I’m so infuriated on behalf of those girls. And bummed out that people feel like that’s something they can do.”

On having her looks scrutinized: “The most common thing that I get is, ‘Am I the only one who doesn’t think that Anna Kendrick is pretty?’ And you’re like, ‘No, you’re not the only one. Arguably, all of the boys in my high school agree with you.'”

On ambition: “Mostly it’s the fear that the wolves are always at your heels and you’re going to be tossed out into the street. If you grow up middle class, you just always feel like you’ve got to be working, because otherwise you won’t be able to pay the rent.” {marieclaire.com}

Anna will be model for the new Kate Spade bags, and has done a Behind the Scenes look with People for her new photoshoot.

Anna Kendrick’s Kate Spade New York Ad Is Here – Go Behind the Scenes With PEOPLE!

Anna Kendrick is the ultimate multi-hyphenate in Hollywood at the moment. She can sing, dance, act, Tweet hilariously — and now she can add “model handbags” to the list, thanks to her holiday campaign for Kate Spade New York. She took PEOPLE exclusively behind the scenes of the shoot, but before you get to ogle all the gorgeous photos in this week’s PEOPLE (on stands Friday), we thought we’d give you a little sneak peek.

“It was so much fun,” Kendrick tells PEOPLE of the shoot. “We went to all these old spots in Vegas, so it felt like we got in a time machine. It was so romantic and fun. There were eight guys on the shoot with me who were just cracking me up! Mostly in their 50s and 60s but a couple in their 30s, and the photographer kept being like, ‘Just try to get her attention. Try to get her to laugh.’ So these guys were just cracking me up. They were totally these Vegas big shots for the day.”

Kendrick posed in a variety of luxe Vegas-appropriate looks (fur hats! bejeweled minis! glam gowns!) while surrounded by a coterie of men holding the brand’s latest bag. And lest you think the bag is too small, know that Kendrick already has her tiny-bag essentials list down to a science. “Just wallet, keys and phone. Well, and my retainer.”

The star, who sums up her style in three words as “Lazy or classic” (hmm, sounds familiar) says she likes to be versatile in her style — not just low-key or super-glam. “I’m either! If I’m running to the grocery store, [I’m in] jeans and a T-shirt,” she says. “But when I go out, I’ve started enjoying looking nice, and that’s a fun new phase for me to be in. To me, when I want to look nice, I just want to go with something that’s flattering and classic.”

From her first splurge (a pair of $75 Ralph Lauren sunglasses) to her most recent (a Cartier orchid pin as a reward for Into the Woods), two things have remained constant: her Weezer tank from a concert 15 years ago (“This is embarrassing.”) and her love of Kate Spade New York bags (even before she was the spokeswoman, she wore them everywhere). “[It’s what] I’ve always loved about Kate Spade, which is that it’s just gorgeous stuff. It’s timeless and it’s sophisticated, but it’s always a little bit playful.” Just like the lady herself. {stylenews.peoplestylewatch.com}

Why Anna Kendrick Is the Sexiest and Savviest Social Media Star of Her Generation

Photo: Carter Smith

With a sharp sense of humor and serious smarts, Anna Kendrick has turned herself into the savviest social-media star of her generation and makes her ELLE cover debut for the magazine’s first-ever Social Issue. Now, with seven projects on the horizon (Happy Christmas is out this month), the acting, singing, joking sensation is about to go supernova. Kendrick garnered an Oscar nomination at 24 with Up in the Air. Her hit song “Cups,” recorded for the Pitch Perfect soundtrack, spent 44 weeks on Billboard‘s Hot 100. Her Saturday Night Live debut this April—a barrage of musical skits—unleashed skill after seemingly limitless skill. But Kendrick also has found a way to meld the famous-person world with the one the rest of us live in, taking every opportunity to remind us—largely via social media—that she’s still an occasionally weird and sometimes flawed human, not just a body hosting an increasingly desirable brand. Tweet by tweet, joke by joke, Kendrick, now 28, has carved out a space in which to define herself. And the result is that despite living a life most of us can’t relate to, she herself seems entirely relatable.

Whether Kendrick is talking about her childhood and teen years, or commenting on her so called ‘approachable hotness,’ she offers an interesting look at the woman who describes herself to her 2.5 million Twitter followers as “Pale, awkward and very very small.” Check out the following excerpts for a sneak preview, and read the full interview exclusively in ELLE’s July issue, available digitally and at newsstands in select cities starting June 17th, and nationwide on June 24th.

On family and divorce:

Kendrick grew up in Portland, Maine, in a house sandwiched between the pond where she and her older brother, Michael, ice-skated in the winter and the baseball diamond where they watched Little League games in the summer. Their parents—Janice, an accountant, and William, a teacher—divorced when she was 15 but stayed on good terms. “I hate when people think you’re broken because your parents are divorced,” Kendrick says. “And I really reject the idea of staying together for the kids. If they’re growing up in a house that’s not healthy, it’s better to know that’s not the model of what marriage should be.”

On her sex appeal:

This lack of ego, coupled with the stealth hourglass shape, the porcelain skin, and the smart mouth, add up to a very specific kind of sex appeal. Kendrick, who hasn’t publicly dated since she and Edgar Wright broke up last year, says she hasn’t been hit on since Up in the Air, “honest to God.” For the 5 million-plus people who have YouTubed her Newcastle Brown Ale Super Bowl ad, this will be hard to buy. In it, the actress is simultaneously sexy and hilarious, twirling her movie-star hair and deadpanning that she’s “approachable hot, like the-hottest-girl-in-your-improv-class-hot.” [@RyBrockington: “Breaking News: I can indeed confirm that @AnnaKendrick47 was the hottest girl in my improv class.”] “I’ve never felt like I’ve exactly traded on my looks,” the actress says matter-of-factly. “When I was a teenager, I was an ultralate bloomer, and my mom would say it was a blessing, because it means you never have to wonder if guys are only interested in you because you’ve got boobs.  I would have been thrilled if guys were interested in me because of my boobs!” But maybe it’s for the best. “Similarly, I think I’m lucky that I’ve never had a crisis about whether the only reason I’m successful is because I’m crazy hot.  It’s not something that crosses my mind.”

Anna Kendrick hasn’t been hit on in five years, ‘Honest to God!’

Why is nobody hitting on Anna Kendrick?

The 28-year-old actress claims she hasn’t been approached in that way since the 2009 dramedy “Up in the Air,” which earned her a supporting actress Oscar nomination.

“Honest to God!” Kendrick quipped in an interview with Elle magazine for its first social-media issue.

Do the math: That’s five years. Maybe it was because the “Cups” singer was in a relationship with “Shaun of the Dead” director Edgar Wright from 2009 to 2013, but still!

“I’ve never felt like I’ve exactly traded on my looks,” the Maine native told the magazine. As a teen, she said, she was a late bloomer.

“My mom would say it was a blessing, because it means you never have to wonder if guys are only interested in you because you’ve got boobs. I would have been thrilled if guys were interested in me because of my boobs!”

But there is a silver lining: “I think I’m lucky that I’ve never had a crisis about whether the only reason I’m successful is because I’m crazy hot. It’s not something that crosses my mind.”

This is the same lady who put on a self-deprecating act for a faux 2014 Super Bowl commercial. In a fake behind-the-scenes video for the nonexistent Newcastle Ale ad, Kendrick jokes, “I was surprised that I even got offered the part, you know, ’cause I don’t think of myself as like, beer-commercial-babe hot. You know? I mean, I’m hot, but like, approachable hot. Like, the-hottest-girl-in-your-improv-class hot. Like, hot to the guys who feel bad calling a girl hot.”

The woman she’s come to be, as she describes on her Twitter page, is “pale, awkward and very, very small.” Funny too. Kendrick offers her more than 2.5 million followers one short burst of humor after another.

“Burned my thumb on set today. iPhone fingerprint ID won’t work. Pretty sure I can get away with murder as long as I only use my thumb,” she tweeted early in May. Or how about, “Sometimes the only reason I leave my house is so when someone asks about my day I don’t have to say, ‘Netflix and avoiding responsibilities.'”

Clearly Kendrick isn’t afraid to have fun, even amid a very busy schedule. The actress will star in at least six films due out in 2015. Notably, she will portray Cinderella in Rob Marshall’s family fantasy “Into the Woods,” alongside Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp. Kendrick will also reprise her role as Beca, the budding singer attending university, in the musical comedy “Pitch Perfect 2.”

Note to Ms. Anna Kendrick: We’re ready to be amused, again {latimes.com}

Anna ranked number 8 in Fast Company’s “The Most Creative People in Business.” She’s done a short one-man video called “The Call,” which is absolutely hilarious! There is also a cool new photoshoot (she’s covergirl!) and great new comprehensive interview!

 For knowing that her best role is herself.

“Oh, I love this guy,” Anna Kendrick says, as a bichon frise greets her hand with its tongue. “Hi, pal! You’re a good guy!” The 28-year-old actress is sitting on a bench in a Hollywood Hills dog park, where a half-dozen or so of California’s chicest hounds are frolicking in a grassy meadow, enjoying a lazy morning on the last day before spring. Off to Kendrick’s right, a galumphing golden retriever chases down a slobbery tennis ball. “I want to steal that fucking dog,” she says.

The pooch-loving Kendrick doesn’t own a dog right now; having six movies coming out over the next 18 months puts a bit of a crimp in pet ownership. (The closest she’s come recently was a Jack Russell terrier that belonged to an ex, but she lost him in the breakup, which seems to bum her out more than the breakup itself.) Occasionally she’ll get lucky and dog-sit for friends, but today she’s here to get her fix vicariously: “Just creeping,” she says. Before long, a yappy-looking mutt scampers over to the bench, lifts his leg, and, before Kendrick can stop him, marks his territory all over her Kate Spade purse. “No!” she says, shooing him away. “Cheeky!” It’s hard to imagine Angelina Jolie or Gwyneth Paltrow ever “just creeping,” much less letting their bags be despoiled by an overfriendly Chihuahua. But Kendrick–who broke out in 2008’s Twilight, did an Oscar-nominated turn opposite George Clooney in Up in the Air, and rose to genuine stardom with 2012’s Pitch Perfect–is part of a new breed of actresses who somehow manage to seem eminently approachable while also remaining heroes to their legions of fans. (See also: Jennifer Lawrence, Lena Dunham, and, to some extent, Emma Stone.) Kendrick’s reach is particularly vast: She counts 1.3 million followers on Instagram and 2.2 million on Twitter, all of whom tune in to hear her say whatever’s on her mind, the more inappropriate the better. Her hit single, “Cups (When I’m Gone),” from the Pitch Perfect soundtrack, shot to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to 120 million viral-video watchers. An increasing number of brands want to tap into her four-quadrant appeal to help push their products; and–oh, right–she’ll appear in three films this year, including Disney’s take on the Stephen Sondheim musical Into the Woods, in which she stars as Cinderella alongside Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep.

And yet, Kendrick says, “Not only is strategy not my strong suit, it doesn’t even enter into my thought process.” She doesn’t have a business manager or even an assistant; recently, when she went to buy a new, used Prius–which she only assented to after her 2002 Prius died on her–she brought along her BFF Aubrey Plaza, of NBC’s Parks and Recreation and the forthcoming zombie rom-com Life After Beth, which Kendrick has a cameo in.

“I’m a terrible negotiator,” Kendrick says. “The guy was doing all the cliché car-salesman things, playing hardball and going to talk to his manager, and all I could say was, ‘Why are you being so mean? Stop it!’ ” Fortunately, Plaza–who’s known for her biting sarcasm and droll demeanor (says Kendrick: “I envy her. I think people would be thrilled to pieces if she threw a drink in their face”)–came prepared to live up to her rep. Their good cop/bad cop routine worked, and after a bit of back-and-forth, Kendrick drove off the lot at Toyota of Glendale with a preowned Prius for exactly what she wanted to pay. “We did it,” she says with a grin.

Anna’s done a new photoshoot/ video for Fast Company, re-enacting Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds. It appears she is slated to be on their list of ‘100 Most Creative People in Business’.

On May 12, Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People In Business Will Be Revealed

On Monday, Fast Company will reveal our 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2014. If last year’s hotly anticipated list was any indication, it will be a powerful and productive medley of big personalities, even bigger ideas, and more than a few troublemakers. Robotics geeks. Twenty-something-year-old hip-hop producers. Royalty. (Royalty!) Maybe even a Vine star.

We can’t tell you who’s on this year’s list just yet. (Patience, people!) But we can tell you that, if history repeats itself, their best work is yet to come. Take last year’s top seed, Nate Silver, whose metrics-driven approach earned the data-crusher a trendy new website within the growing ESPN empire. Or Kirthiga Reddy, who opened the first Facebook offices in India–a country where just one in 10 people had Internet access at the time. Or, maybe take a look at Bryan Cranston, who, in one breathtaking finale, secured himself a spot as one of the most versatile and powerful actors of a generation while wearing little more than a scowl and a pair of dirty underwear. The list goes on and on.
Some of 2013’s Most Creative People–who will be on this year’s list?

One likely MCPer we can and are delighted to share, though, is Anna Kendrick. The Pitch Perfect actress managed to steal a nation’s fickle attention (and go multi-platinum) armed with a catchy tune, some plastic cups, and a deft set of multi-tasking skills.

Will she top this year’s list? Who knows! (Okay, yes, we do.) We can’t wait to share all 100 with you. So we’ll see you back here on Monday. And feel free to tell us how much you love our picks–or not!–by tweeting all about it with hashtag #MCP14. fastcompany.com

Anna also teased a sneak peek from a shoot she recently did with Glamour. More info atDaily Mail, and hopefully more photos of both shoots soon!

I’ve added a ton of new, unseen, or higher quality photos to the gallery. Including lots from Sundance 2014 (a few more portraits have popped up), Oscar 2014 portraits and rares, New York Fashion Week MQ’s and HQ candids, and a ton of fan photos that I have had saved from the last couple of years.
