Anna Kendrick Sings About Destiny’s Child, Compares Herself to Michelle Williams

Anna Kendrick proved she’s a talented singer in 2012’s musical comedy Pitch Perfect, and now she’s showing off her lyrical abilities in the July 26 episode of IFC’s Comedy Bang! Bang! In a sneak preview from the show, the Oscar-nominated star, 27, performs a completely improvised song about Destiny’s Child with the show’s band leader, Reggie Watts.

“I feel like if I were in Destiny’s Child, I’d be Michelle,” she sings of Williams, who joined the group in 2000. “She caught a lot of air at the Super Bowl. She looked like she didn’t expect it.” (The “Bootylicious” singers joined forces during Beyonce Knowles’ Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show on Feb. 3, 2013.)

With Watts manning the turntables, Kendrick continues to sing about the musical trio. “I feel like if I were in Destiny’s Child, I’d be Michelle. Most people wouldn’t call her their favorite,” she sings. “But it’s pretty cool how they always give her the bridge.”

“I definitely wouldn’t call her my favorite,” Watts laughs.

Though Destiny’s Child has not officially disbanded, the group hasn’t released a full-length album since 2004’s Destiny Fulfilled. Knowles, 31, is currently headlining the Mrs. Carter Show World Tour, while Kelly Rowland, 32, is busy promoting her recently released album, Talk a Good Game. The new judge is also taping episodes for the third season of The X Factor, airing this fall on FOX. Williams, 32, will star in her own reality show, My Sister’s Keeper. Her latest solo single, “If We Had Your Eyes,” was released on June 24.

Kendrick’s episode of Comedy Bang! Bang! airs Friday, July 26, at 10 p.m. EST on IFC.

‘Cups’ Reaches Billboard’s 100 Top 10!

This week, ‘Cups’, Anna’s hit song from Pitch Perfect hit the Billboard 100’s top ten songs played on the radio! This is a huge feat considering Anna is solely an actress, and songs from movie soundtracks don’t generally place nearly this high on the list. Add popstar to Anna’s resume – go girl! (And lets get Cups to number one!)

How Anna Kendrick’s Soundtrack Sleeper ‘Cups’ Got to the Top of the Charts

As reported yesterday, Anna Kendrick reaches the Billboard Hot 100’s top 10 at last with “Cups (Pitch Perfect’s When I’m Gone),” which rises 13-10 in its 28th week on the chart.

Since it’s been almost a year since her song was released via the box office hit “Pitch Perfect,” and since the track is still finding new audiences thanks to its continued inroads at radio, let’s look back at the pop culture and chart odyssey that “Cups” has taken on its way to reaching the Hot 100’s top tier this week.

Aug. 9, 1985
Kendrick is born in Portland, Maine. (Why not start at the beginning?)

1995 (-ish)
Kendrick catches a bus from Portland to New York to attend auditions, ultimately with her sights set on performing on Broadway. By 1998, at 12, she scores her first acting role, as Dinah, in the Broadway musical “High Society.” Her performance nets her a Tony Award nomination, making her the third-youngest Tony Award nominee ever.

(And now we fast-forward …)

Sept. 28, 2012
“Pitch Perfect” premieres in U.S. theaters. It ranks at No. 3 in its first weekend, grossing $14.8 million. It trails “Taken 2″ and “Hotel Transylvania” (neither of which, obviously, boasts a song keeping them in public consciousness long after like “Cups” has done for “Pitch Perfect,” reinforcing the staying power that a soundtrack hit can engender for a film).

October 4
Kendrick appears on CBS’ “Late Show With David Letterman” and shows off her dexterity at performing “Cups” as she does in “Pitch Perfect”…

Actually, let’s go way back to 1937 for a moment: In 2009, British act Lulu and the Lampshades unveiled its version (and unique cup-assisted performance style) of “When I’m Gone” as a reworking of the 1937 Appalachian folk song “Miss Me When I’m Gone” by J. E. Mainer’s Mountaineers. Anna Burden’s performance subsequently garnered attention on YouTube (3.7 million views to date), which led to front page placement on Reddit. Myriad other online covers followed.

“‘Cause I’m a huge loser, I thought the best way to spend an entire afternoon would be watching (Burden’s) video 50 times and teaching myself how to do it,” Kendrick told Letterman. When the film’s creative powers “found out I could, they wanted me to (perform) it in the movie.”

October 13
The “Pitch Perfect” soundtrack debuts on the Billboard 200 at No. 43 with 9,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

January 12, 2013
In its 1-minute-16-second-long soundtrack version, “Cups” enters the Hot 100 at No. 93. At the time, 69% of its chart points are due to digital sales, 31% to streaming and 0% to radio.

February 2
With the film having achieved continued box office success, the “Pitch Perfect” soundtrack spends its first of three weeks at its No. 3 Billboard 200 peak. It’s sold 772,000 to date (and jumps 20-13 on the current chart).

April 12
With the song in a new form (see next item), the official “Cups” video premieres. To date, it’s up to 29 million YouTube views.

April 20
“Cups” debuts on the Mainstream Top 40 radio airplay chart at No. 40 after Republic Records released a new, longer edit featuring much more instrumentation than on the almost all-a capella (a-“cup”-ella?) soundtrack version. “Anyone that has a preteen knows (‘Cups’),” Republic senior VP/radio and video promotion David Nathan beams to Billboard as the label begins promoting the song to radio. “‘Pitch Perfect’ is a cultural phenomenon and we’re very happy to be a part of it.”

JR Ammons, program director of Mainstream Top 40 reporter WZPL Indianapolis, says that despite initial apathy, he believes in the track’s potential as a radio hit. “I saw the movie when it came out and, honestly, the song didn’t stick out to me as something that I would be playing months later.

“I wouldn’t have thought about that song again after the movie… until my daughter learned the cup thing off YouTube and was singing it over and over and over in the house. Then, I come to work and see the single sales climb week after week in Indianapolis with zero radio airplay…

“Once you get away from the source of the song, it being from a movie about college freshmen, there’s nothing really that youthful-exclusive about it,” Ammon adds.

“No matter how I try to fight it, the hook is in my head every time it comes on our station.”

June 1
With radio playing the new edit, “Cups” reaches the Hot 100’s top 40 (rising 44-36) in its 21st week. (In addition to its digital single release, the new version appears on the EP Pitch Perfect: More From Pitch Perfect, which charges 139-119 on the Billboard 200 this week.)

June 22
“Pitch Perfect” makes its premium cable premiere on HBO. With the film having grossed $113 million worldwide to date, according to Box Office Mojo, the TV exposure can only help build the familiarity of “Cups,” especially among those who may not have seen the film in theaters.

July 8
The always Twitter-witty Kendrick marvels at the song’s new levels of airplay: “Holy s*** it’s happening. I’m hearing my song on the radio. Every music biopic ever has taught me this will lead to drugs and madness… #sweet”

This week
Climbing 13-10 in its 28th week, “Cups” completes the fourth-longest ascent to the top 10 for a woman in the Hot 100’s nearly 55-year history, bested only by Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats,” the steadiest riser among all acts (38 weeks; 2007), and Faith Hill’s “This Kiss” (30; 1998) and “The Way You Love Me” (29; 2000).

While Underwood and Hill reached the top 10 by seeing their songs start at country before scoring pop and adult radio airplay, the pure-pop “Cups” has made its journey via measured increasing sales and pop and adult radio’s interest following its instrument-infused edit.

“Cups” also claims its first top 10 placement on an airplay chart, as it bumps 11-9 on Adult Top 40. On Mainstream Top 40, it jumps 18-15. In its second week on Adult Contemporary, it lifts 25-22. In contrast to its debut week on the Hot 100 (see Jan. 12, above), radio is now a major driver of its success: 27% of its chart points stem from airplay, with 47% from sales and 26% from streaming.

In all, and given that its growth at radio is still continuing solidly, it appears that, to paraphrase the song, it’ll be a long time before “Cups” is gone.

Anna Kendrick hits a fashion high note as she collects award for selling one million copies of her music single Cups

She blew audiences away with her folksy singing voice in the 2012 film Pitch Perfect.

So much so that Anna Kendrick’s rendition of a 1937 old-time song in the film has turned her into somewhat of a pop star.

The 27-year-old looked fresh-faced in a nude-coloured dress as she collected an award from iHeartRadio for selling one million copies of her single Cups in New York on Friday.

The Oscar-nominated actress looked gorgeous in the flouncy dress, which nipped in at the waist and featured a thin-strapped halter neck.

Anna added an unusual touch with dark brown brogues that added a schoolgirl touch to the outfit.

She wore her red hair in loose waves over her shoulders and kept her makeup natural, enhancing her porcelain complexion with a rosy pink lipstick.

Huge honour: Anna smiled proudly as she held up her award commemorating her phenomenal single sales

Anna was shown accepting the award for her single, which is a cover of Lulu and the Lampshades’ song Cups (You’re Gonna Miss Me), a rendition of a 1937 folk song.

The star sings the song in the hit movie Pitch Perfect, which sees her play Beca, a freshman at Barden University, who is cajoled into joining an all-girls’ a cappella singing group.

Anna performs the song when she auditions to join the group, and she is seen onstage using just a plastic cup and the stage floor as percussion.

Kendrick is no stranger to musical performances. Her first acting role was as Dinah in the Broadway musical High Society in 1998 when she was 12.

The performance won her a Theatre World Award, a Drama Desk Award, and Tony Award nominations, making her the third-youngest Tony Award nominee.

Kendrick went on to appear in a number of other theater productions, including the musical A Little Night Music, before making her film debut in the 2003 musical comedy Camp.

Anna Kendrick: “Cups” Sneak Peek
Anna Kendrick:

Check out this new behind-the-scenes footage from Anna Kendrick‘s “Cups” video shoot!

The 27-year-old actress chatted with Entertainment Tonight about re-creating the song for a single release and whether or not she would ever record a solo album.

“My next movie is a musical which is crazy because I didn’t mean for that to happen,” Anna explained about her upcoming flick The Last 5 Years. “As far as making an album, album? I would just feel so silly, so it’s not something I’m thinking about.”

Would Anna Kendrick Release a Solo Album?

Anna Kendrick pleasantly surprised moviegoers last year when she flexed her vocal chords in the musical comedy Pitch Perfect and will flaunt her golden pipes once again in the upcoming musical The Last Five Years. However, would she ever record her vocal skills to compile her own album?

Kendrick’s musical performance in Pitch Perfect, named “Cups,” became an instant hit, receiving its own adapted radio version and landing on the Billboard Hot 100.

Next on the list, the song will launch its own music video. ET was exclusively on the set of the video for “Cups,” which starred none other than Kendrick, who pondered the notion of recording a solo album.

“My next movie is a musical, which is crazy ’cause I didn’t mean for that to happen. It’s not like a strategy,” the 27-year-old actress said. “…But, as far as making an…album, I mean, I just would feel so silly. So, it’s not something I’m thinking about.”

Although she’s not keen on the idea of producing her own solo album to send out to the world, the 50/50 actress was thrilled to be filming a music video for her Pitch Perfect song.

It not only presented her with an opportunity to work with director Jason Moore once again, but also pleased her cinephilic needs.

“[I agreed to the music video] mostly ’cause I wanted to work with Jason again ’cause I’m totally obsessed with him,” the once Broadway actress said, “and because this idea of an entire diner full of people doing the ‘cup thing’ really satisfied the Busby Berkeley (director, choreographer) lover in me. I was really excited to come and do this music video.”

Kendrick’s Pitch Perfect character, college student “Beca Mitchell,” may be the founder of the original “Cups” tune, but she revealed that she was out of character for the music video and its context has strayed from the world of the film from which it originated.

Pitch Perfect‘s popularity hasn’t been isolated to the catchy tune. After garnering $113 million worldwide at the box office, the film, which also features breakout star Rebel Wilson, has accumulated an impressive $46 million and counting in DVD sales.

“To be honest, I always suspected it would do really well and, in fact, better on DVD because…it makes sense to me that lots of girls are getting together and watching this in their homes,” Kendrick assessed. “…I like that it’s…[a] weird social movie.”

“Cups” from the Pitch Perfect soundtrack is out now. You can view the director’s cut of the video on Vevo.com. {etonline.com}

Anna Kendrick Goes Blonde for New Movie Role: Picture

Anna Kendrick is a newly-minted blonde bombshell. The 27-year-old Pitch Perfect actress recently dyed her hair blonde, but admits she’s still adjusting to her shocking transformation.

“Had to dye my hair for a film. Keep getting spooked when I pass reflective surfaces,” the former brunette joked on Twitter Tuesday, April 9. “Now I know how puppies feel.”

On April 11, she shared a black and white picture on Instagram of her long blonde hair concealing her face. She joked, “Debuting my new hair color in B&W in case any of my followers are colorblind. Or dogs.”

But the Oscar-nominated actress doesn’t plan to stay a blonde for long. She added, “So strange. Just until we wrap.”

Unfortunately, Kendrick’s new blonde ‘do may not be making its red carpet debut Sunday at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards. Though the cast of Pitch Perfect is set to join former costar and host of the show Rebel Wilson in a special opening act number, Kendrick may not be joining them.

A rep for the actress told the Huffington Post that Kendrick will not be attending because she’s filming The Last Five Years in NYC.

Though she won’t be joining the Pitch Perfect reunion, fans can still enjoy watching Kendrick’s new music video for the “Cups” song from the 2012 musical comedy. The video premiere Friday at 4:30 PST on Vevo, and Kendrick tells Us that she was surprised the short song became a radio hit.

“They’ve added some instrumentation which is really cool and vibing off the whole Mumford and Sons kind of sound,” she says. “They’d originally looped my voice doing the choruses which really bugged me, so I begged them to let me go re-record it so it didn’t sound creepy and repetitive.” {usmagazine.com}

Anna in FunnyorDie Video

Anna Kendrick goes K-Pop with F(x) :D

Anna Kendrick has become K-pop group f(x)’s new member in Funny or Die’s latest comedy video.

The Pitch Perfect actress is forced into joining the South Korean girlband by her manager, but finds it difficult to adapt and is mocked by her fellow group members.

However, through grit and determination (and a training montage and playing StarCraft), she eventually wins everyone over.

EDIT: Now here’s the behind the scenes look:

The 27-year-old actress teamed back up with Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore for the video.

The tune, which Anna sings for her audition in the hit movie, has been climbing up the Billboard Hot 100 chart since it’s debut.

“‘Cause I’m a huge loser, I thought the best way to spend an entire afternoon would be watching (Burden‘s) video 50 times and teaching myself how to do it,” Anna previously told David Letterman. “[When the producers] found out I could, they wanted me to (perform) it in the movie.”

Anna Kendrick Dons An Apron On The Set Of Her New Music Video Cups!

Anna Kendrick looks all kinds of ADORBS covered in flour!

On the set of her music video for upcoming film-soundtrack-to-radio single, Cups, the adorable Pitch Perfect star took to her Instagram to share a picture of herself in an apron and kitchen gear.

And it looks like things got quite messy!

Cups, originally a Lulu and the Lampshades, was remade by Anna for the Pitch Perfect soundtrack. But it was recently announced that the song would be remixed for radio release as well.

Think Anna’s voice has what it takes to achieve mainstream radio success?

We don’t think she should be too worried. We already know this one’s capable of anything.

P.S. The pint-size actress looks completely unfazed by her recent breakup from long-time love, Edgar Wright. Way to go, lady!

Anna Kendrick’s ‘Pitch Perfect’ song ‘Cups’ has been remixed for mainstream radio

Anna Kendrick has already enjoyed a few weeks on Billboard‘s Hot 100 with her breakout a cappella hit “Cups,” from the Pitch Perfect soundtrack. Now, in a sign of just how popular the movie has become since its December DVD release, “Cups” is getting pushed to mainstream radio. According to AllAccess, the song hits stations on March 26.

A longer, remixed version of the song recently hit the web — complete with strummy guitar and plinky xylophone — which you can listen to below. The folky sing-a-long is slight, for sure, but it’s also infectious, and Kendrick has a prettily sweet tone that makes it all go down easy.

Kendrick is something of a chameleon. At 27 years old, she’s already gone through a few image transformations. We first got to know her as a precocious, uptight worker bee in Up in the Air, which may have falsely implied thatthat was her real life persona. But she morphed herself into a nerdy/sexy Reddit gal over the years. And these days, she’s a savvy, potty-mouthed Twitter user, and the instant cult status of Pitch Perfect has earned her major cred with young fans. But are you ready for the next (potential) stage… Anna Kendrick: Chart Star? {entertainmentweekly.com}

Anna Cameos in Ben Folds Music Video

Anna has a small cameo in Ben Folds‘ new music video, ‘Do it Anyway’, which also features Jim Hensen’s Fraggles! Here is the video (Anna’s at the 3.30 mark) and behind the scenes look at the making of:

Fraggles Crash Ben Folds Five Session in ‘Do It Anyway’

Jim Henson’s Fraggles crash Ben Folds Five’s recording session in the band’s new video for “Do It Anyway,” from The Sound of the Life of the Mind, the group’s first album in 13 years. The reunited piano rockers jam out in the studio with comedian Chris Hardwick, Up In The Air star Anna Kendrick and a hilarious Rob Corddry as their wacky producer. As the track chugs and rambles forward, the Muppets step in to harmonize, play along and clown around. But no matter how good your band is, without a proper producer, nothing will ever make it to tape. {rollingstone.com}
