Hollywood Stars Gather in Silicon Valley for 2014 Breakthrough Prizes in Physics and Life Sciences

“It’s nice to see all the Hollywood people peppering the greater scientific crowd. I’m sure it’s a unique opportunity for them to feel stupid and poor,” Michael C. Hall murmured last night at NASA’s Ames Research Center, in Silicon Valley, where Graydon Carter co-hosted the awards ceremony for the 2014 Breakthrough Prize in Physics and Life Sciences.

A collision of celebrities—from Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey, and Vivi Nevo, to Anna Kendrick, Rob Lowe, and Lily Cole—rubbed elbows to celebrate the six winners in life sciences and two in physics. Each of the winners was awarded $3 million (the two in physics split the award), which makes the prize, established by Yuri Milner in partnership with Art Levinson, Sergey Brin, Anne Wojcicki, Zuckerberg, and Priscilla Chan, one of the most lucrative in the world (the Nobel awards its laureates around $1.2 million each). When asked how the sci-fi setting stacked up to Hollywood, Conan O’Brien looked at fellow guest David Petraeus and said, “I don’t often see a general with that many medals at, say, the Emmy’s after-party or Governor’s Awards. You know, there’s a different tone here.” (Petraeus himself spent much of the evening talking to event host Kevin Spacey.)

“It’s beautiful here, isn’t it?” Larry Page said, looking around the spectacular venue, and scanning such attendees as Gabby Giffords, Rupert Murdoch, and Jeffrey Katzenberg. “It’s great that people are paying more attention to science.” (His fellow Googler Brin chose a rainbow-checked backpack for his “black-tie optional” attire.) Breaking the ice between world-class scientists, tech elite, military, and Hollywood stars were crossover types like designer Yves Béhar, who said, “NASA is in again. People are excited to be going to space and [about] technology in general. They went out of fashion. They are back now.”

Anna Kendrick told VF Daily that she had been chatted up by two scientists who had no idea who she was at first. “In Hollywood, someone’s going to give you two kisses on the cheek and pretend that they remember you,” she said. “Here, someone is straight up going to ask you who you are and what you’re doing here, and I love it. It’s hard facts with these guys.” When asked if she was good at science in school, Kendrick replied, “Not at all. This is very exciting, but my seventh-grade teacher would be losing sleep over the fact that I get to be here.” To this point, Conan O’Brien echoed that he was “pretty good at biology, but bad at physics. Whenever someone says, like, time is a circle that bends and there is no beginning and end, that’s when I feel like we’re having a freshman-dorm conversation and we’re all high.” {vanityfair.com}

. . . MacLaine made the tribute performance easier than usual, since it’s notoriously difficult to fete film actors onstage. MacLaine is also a skilled theater actress and dancer, and the tribute began with a montage of “The Pajama Game,” which kicked off MacLaine’s Broadway career in the 1950s; “Steam Heat” and Anna Kendrick’s “It’s Not Where You Start” from the Broadway show “Seesaw” also charmed. {washingtonpost.com}

Anna Kendrick: Kennedy Center Honors Gala with the Obamas!

Anna Kendrick hits the red carpet at the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors Gala held on Sunday (December 8) at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

The 28-year-old actress was one of many, including Barack and Michelle Obama, who stepped out to honor this year’s special guests – Shirley MacLaine, Billy Joel, Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock, and opera star Martina Arroyo.

“The diverse group of extraordinary individuals we honor today haven’t just proven themselves to be the best of the best,” Obama said. “Despite all their success, all their fame, they’ve remained true to themselves — and inspired the rest of us to do the same.”

FYI: Anna is wearing an Elie Saab dress, Charlotte Olympia shoes, a Rauwolf clutch, a Dana Rebecca Designs ring, EF Collection rings, and Graziela earrings. {justjared.com}
