Hollywood Stars Gather in Silicon Valley for 2014 Breakthrough Prizes in Physics and Life Sciences

“It’s nice to see all the Hollywood people peppering the greater scientific crowd. I’m sure it’s a unique opportunity for them to feel stupid and poor,” Michael C. Hall murmured last night at NASA’s Ames Research Center, in Silicon Valley, where Graydon Carter co-hosted the awards ceremony for the 2014 Breakthrough Prize in Physics and Life Sciences.

A collision of celebrities—from Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey, and Vivi Nevo, to Anna Kendrick, Rob Lowe, and Lily Cole—rubbed elbows to celebrate the six winners in life sciences and two in physics. Each of the winners was awarded $3 million (the two in physics split the award), which makes the prize, established by Yuri Milner in partnership with Art Levinson, Sergey Brin, Anne Wojcicki, Zuckerberg, and Priscilla Chan, one of the most lucrative in the world (the Nobel awards its laureates around $1.2 million each). When asked how the sci-fi setting stacked up to Hollywood, Conan O’Brien looked at fellow guest David Petraeus and said, “I don’t often see a general with that many medals at, say, the Emmy’s after-party or Governor’s Awards. You know, there’s a different tone here.” (Petraeus himself spent much of the evening talking to event host Kevin Spacey.)

“It’s beautiful here, isn’t it?” Larry Page said, looking around the spectacular venue, and scanning such attendees as Gabby Giffords, Rupert Murdoch, and Jeffrey Katzenberg. “It’s great that people are paying more attention to science.” (His fellow Googler Brin chose a rainbow-checked backpack for his “black-tie optional” attire.) Breaking the ice between world-class scientists, tech elite, military, and Hollywood stars were crossover types like designer Yves Béhar, who said, “NASA is in again. People are excited to be going to space and [about] technology in general. They went out of fashion. They are back now.”

Anna Kendrick told VF Daily that she had been chatted up by two scientists who had no idea who she was at first. “In Hollywood, someone’s going to give you two kisses on the cheek and pretend that they remember you,” she said. “Here, someone is straight up going to ask you who you are and what you’re doing here, and I love it. It’s hard facts with these guys.” When asked if she was good at science in school, Kendrick replied, “Not at all. This is very exciting, but my seventh-grade teacher would be losing sleep over the fact that I get to be here.” To this point, Conan O’Brien echoed that he was “pretty good at biology, but bad at physics. Whenever someone says, like, time is a circle that bends and there is no beginning and end, that’s when I feel like we’re having a freshman-dorm conversation and we’re all high.” {vanityfair.com}

Anna @ 2013 Kennedy Center Honors

. . . MacLaine made the tribute performance easier than usual, since it’s notoriously difficult to fete film actors onstage. MacLaine is also a skilled theater actress and dancer, and the tribute began with a montage of “The Pajama Game,” which kicked off MacLaine’s Broadway career in the 1950s; “Steam Heat” and Anna Kendrick’s “It’s Not Where You Start” from the Broadway show “Seesaw” also charmed. {washingtonpost.com}

Anna Kendrick: Kennedy Center Honors Gala with the Obamas!

Anna Kendrick hits the red carpet at the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors Gala held on Sunday (December 8) at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

The 28-year-old actress was one of many, including Barack and Michelle Obama, who stepped out to honor this year’s special guests – Shirley MacLaine, Billy Joel, Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock, and opera star Martina Arroyo.

“The diverse group of extraordinary individuals we honor today haven’t just proven themselves to be the best of the best,” Obama said. “Despite all their success, all their fame, they’ve remained true to themselves — and inspired the rest of us to do the same.”

FYI: Anna is wearing an Elie Saab dress, Charlotte Olympia shoes, a Rauwolf clutch, a Dana Rebecca Designs ring, EF Collection rings, and Graziela earrings. {justjared.com}

MTV Movie Awards: Celebrity “Catfish” Spoof

Anna didn’t attend last nights MTV Movie Awards, hosted by Rebel Wilson and attended by her Pitch Perfect co-stars, who accepted the award for Best Music Moment and did a live performance as the Barden Bellas, but she did tweet them good luck, and per-recorded a short for the show. Anna plays a texting obsessed version of herself alongside Mark Wahlberg, Joe Monijello, MTV’s Josh Horowitz, and the hosts of Catifish.

Rebel Wilson has been one busy lady, preparing to host the 2013 MTV Movie Awards and setting up romantic dates with some of Hollywood’s hottest.

Or has she? That’s what “Catfish” hosts Nev Schulman and Max Joseph helped MTV’s Josh Horowitz find out during the MTV Movie Awards pre-show.

You see, Horowitz has been in a year-long online relationship with Wilson (or, more likely, someone purporting to be Wilson) and has yet to meet his love in real life. So he enlisted MTV’s resident dating detectives to aid him in discovering the true identity of his Internet paramour. What they uncover is a tangled web — one ensnaring actors Mark Wahlberg, Anna Kendrick and Joe Manganiello. In short, it’s the first celebrity Catfish.

Click play on the clip above to watch the incredibly awkward results of Schulman and Joseph’s investigation!

Of course, this all leads up to the big show: the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, airing live at 9 p.m. ET. In addition to her hosting duties, Wilson will reunite with her “Pitch Perfect” co-stars, including Anna Camp and Skylar Astin, for an aca-awesome mash-up performance that’s not to be missed, while Selena Gomez and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will also rock the Sony Pictures Studios lot with their new singles. In addition, a trio of the silver screen’s finest will be recognized with special tributes. Emma Watson will receive the Trailblazer Award, Will Ferrell will be honored with the first-ever Comedic Genius Award and Jamie Foxx will take home the Generation Award.

And stick around after the show for a sneak peek at Vinny Guadagnino’s new series “The Show With Vinny,” airing at 11 p.m. ET.

The 2013 MTV Movie Awards are a wrap! Stick with us for red-carpet photos, our Movie Awards winners list and more exclusive movie premieres. {mtv.com}

Anna Kendrick announces Independent Spirit Awards nominations

Twilight actress Anna Kendrick was an early Santa Claus on 27 November when she got the joy of announcing the nominations for the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards (click to see the list!)

In fact, with so much good news, she may have even beat Barbara Palvin for 2012′s best Santa (Barbara may win in the sexy category, however).

Let’s take a look…

Anna Kendrick knows about the joy of being nominated, too. Not so very long ago, she received an Academy Award nomination for her role in “Up in the Air” alongside George Clooney. She also knows all about WINNING an Independant Spirit Award: in 2007, she won two for “Camp,” Best Debut Performance and Best Supporting Actress.

Anna didn’t look like she stressed about her look for the event, either. She wore a simple, light pink sundress with a pretty cut and tied her hair in a simple braided half-do created by loosely connecting two braids with bobby pins in the back. Lipstick glossed her lips and finished the look! Maybe that explains why she genuinely looked like she was having a blast at the press conference (not like a certain Cara Delevigne we know and her omnipresent pout.) Then again, hanging out with Common has to be fun.

What’s next for Anna?

So, for the stars nominated, they have the awards to look forward to. But Anna’s current project just ended with the culmination of the “Twilight Saga”. Good thing she stacks her cards… “The Company You Keep”, her most recent film, got rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival.
