Anna Kendrick Admits Her Strange Fragrance Habit and Talks ‘The Last Five Years’
It seems Anna Kendrick is everywhere these days, from iTunes Top 10 charts to awards shows and fashion shows.
Last night, the in-demand actress stopped by See by Chloé’s fragrance launch in New York City’s West Village, where she joined designer Monika Chiang, model and DJ Leigh Lezark, and Olivia Palermo, who shared her summer beauty secrets:
“PCA always has great sun block. Also, always hydrate! I use more serums than anything. I think that those are a little lighter on the skin [than face cream]. A bit of color is good for you, too.”
Meanwhile, Kendrick revealed a quirky fragrance habit, a new summer project, and an upcoming movie musical (and no, it’s not a Pitch Perfect sequel!).
What is your favorite memory attached to a scent?
God, that’s a good question. This is kind of gross, but I keep a bottle of lotion from every movie I’ve ever done. It’s usually some cheap bottle of lotion or shampoo that I picked up at a drug store, and then I’ll keep it in a closet somewhere so if I smell it, it totally takes me back. So I’ve got a little drawer of body butters, shampoos, and stuff that I was just using for one movie.
Can you give us an example?
I don’t know the brand, but there was a mango body butter that I used during Up in the Air and if I smell it, it completely takes me back even to this day.
You’re big on film, but started out on Broadway. Any role you love that would take you back to theater?
Luckily, I’m in the city shooting a movie this summer. It’s called the The Last Five Years and it’s a musical. So, I get to really delve into that right now which is so amazing. The music is so incredible, so it definitely makes me feel like I’m back in touch with my [Broadway] roots.
How are you preparing for ‘The Last Five Years?’
It’s intense, definitely. We’ve been just rehearsing, and you know, trying to get prepared to sing basically everyday.
We’re going to be doing a lot of it live, as much as we can, and I’m just trying to take a lot of vitamins to make sure I don’t get sick!
What can you tell us about your co-star, also Broadway-bred, Jeremy Jordan?
Oh, he’s so incredible! He’s such a talent. Jeremy challenges me as a singer and he’s so kind and so giving. It’s going to be such a great experience.
‘Pitch Perfect,’ Kendrick hit high notes on charts
The movie “Pitch Perfect,” which grossed $65 million domestically, also is a success on the music charts, where the film’s soundtrack has peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and has sold more than 713,961 units so far, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Actress Anna Kendrick’s rendition of the folk-pop tune “Cups” is helping push the soundtrack to musical heights: The song has sold one million tracks and currently sits at No. 27 on the Hot 100 chart.
“It’s totally surprising,” the 27-year-old said. “I always figured soundtrack sales would be a part of a movie that has so much music in it … but I had no idea we’d be into summer of the next year, and people would still be talking about the album (and) buying the album.
“I’ve been in Berlin so I still haven’t heard it on the radio,” Kendrick said, “so I haven’t had that moment of like being in my car, like in all of those movies about musicians the first time that you hear it in the car. But then I think, like, my band would break up and we’d all do drugs and yell at each other and sleep with each other’s wives, so maybe I don’t need that moment because that is a foreshadowing moment that I think would end in tragedy.”
“Cups” was originally just 76 seconds long, but Kendrick re-recorded a version that is just over 2 minutes and it appears on a second soundtrack from the film dubbed “More from Pitch Perfect,” which was released last week.
The albums feature mash-ups and covers of songs including Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” Rihanna’s “S&M” and La Roux’s “Bulletproof.”
Anna Kendrick craves laidback look
Anna Kendrick would like to wear comfortable purple clothes at events, with red slippers if she was feeling “fancy”.
The Twilight star looked stylish at Coach’s Third Annual Summer Party, rocking a sheer shirt, Marissa Webb vest in brown leather and skin-tight, blue Citizens of Humanity jeans.
While she may appear to be glamorous, Anna would dress very differently if she had it her way.
“I would literally wear purple sweatpants, a purple pullover, purple socks, and purple slippers every day, red slippers if I was feeling fancy,” she laughed to InStyle while at the bash.
Anna helped present at this year’s Tony Awards and made jaws drop as she walked the red carpet in a Donna Karan Atelier dress.
The gown was dark blue with gold detail on the bodice and fell in folds with a two-toned skirt at the bottom.
The Pitch Perfect star is slowly starting to love being a fashionista.
“Fashion is like a new part of my life, and I really like experimenting and dressing up,” she smiled.
“One day I’ll try to have a tougher look and the next day will be really romantic. I really enjoy wearing different outfits.”
Anna has certainly been mixing up her fashion choices recently, which she says is thanks to her stylist.
The star is glad she has someone to help persuade her not to opt for “little black dresses” every time.
“It’s nice to have somebody there to say it’s ok to wear a backless dress that’s long with embellishments – you’re not going to explode,” she previously laughed to Marie Claire.

The “Pitch Perfect” actress had been insecure about her bottom teeth for some years so the transformation was incredible for her.
