Anna in “Happy Christmas”

Joe Swanberg, Anna’s director in Drinking Buddies, made a Christmas movie with Anna in it last year, which will probably be out in festivals next year.

Joe Swanberg Made a Christmas Movie on 16mm With Anna Kendrick, Lena Dunham, Melanie Lynskey, and Mark Webber

Joe Swanberg has undoubtedly entered into a new stage of his career, but that hasn’t slowed down his output. “Drinking Buddies,” his romantic comedy starring Olivia Wilde and Anna Kendrick, was well-received at SXSW and received a distribution deal with Magnolia Pictures. While “Drinking Buddies” comes out this summer, it’s far from the last Swanberg movie that will screen in 2013: His Jane Adams-starring drama “All the Light in the Sky” comes out this fall, and he’s currently editing two features, including the previously reported low budget production “24 Exposures.”

Additionally, Indiewire has exclusively learned that Swanberg shot another movie last December that, like “Drinking Buddies,” unites several familiar faces for an intimate story.

Tentatively called “Happy Christmas,” the Chicago-set production reunites the filmmaker with Kendrick as well as “Girls” creator Lena Dunham, Melanie Lynskey and Mark Webber. Though these actors have some mainstream clout, they’ve all recently produced work in the indie space. Lynskey starred in the Sundance opener “Hello I Must Be Going,” while Webber directed an intimate feature about father, “The End of Love,” which opened earlier this year.

Though Swanberg preferred to keep most of the plot secret for now, he said that it “focuses on a family and is set during the holidays.” He also revealed another detail about the production perhaps even more impressive than its cast: Working with “Beasts of the Southern Wild” cinematographer Ben Richardson (who also shot “Drinking Buddies”), the quintessentially digital-friendly Swanberg made “Happy Christmas” on Super 16mm film, his first production to utilize the medium since film school. “I sensed that pretty soon it might be too late to go through that process again,” he said. “I wanted to do it at least one more time.” Swanberg hopes the film will make the festival rounds next year.

Press Updates

Anna Kendrick: Lively is tough

Anna Kendrick says Blake Lively could “kick her ass”.

The actress is currently shooting indie thriller movie The Voices with Blake’s husband, actor Ryan Reynolds.

Anna joked that she’s sure the Gossip Girl star doesn’t mind her working with Ryan, as Blake’s physically much more impressive than she is.

“I’m in Germany with Ryan Reynolds, I’m doing a movie with him now. He’s a sweetheart. He’s here with his wife Blake Lively, they are the cutest couple. It makes you sick. They are very, very sweet. No, there’s no PDAs they are very lovely, they are not obnoxious at all,” Anna told Australian radio hosts Kyle & Jackie O.

“She’s so tall too, I’ve met her before, years and years ago, and every time I see her, her height surprises me. She could totally kick my ass! I don’t think she’s worried about it [me working with Ryan].”

Anna has been making headlines for her saucy posts on Twitter. She enjoys seeing what she can get away with when posting her rude comments online.

“On Twitter you say something dirty and then watch people’s minds explode, it’s really fun. It’s the mischievous part of me that would pull Halloween pranks. I do have fun saying dirty things on Twitter,” she laughed.

“Yeah my mom does read them, she follows me on Twitter, but I cursed like a sailor growing up so she’s probably used to it. Although she probably does think I’m quite strange saying it.”

What’s the first information you consume in the morning?
I still haven’t bought a clock radio, so I look at my phone to check the time. And then I’ll see that I’ve got texts and emails. So then I’m just up because I’m afraid that somebody’s died in the middle of the night.

How do you get your news?
I’m addicted to Reddit. I spend a lot of time there, probably more than I should, but it’s definitely one of the first things that I check in the morning. That’s how I found out about the theater shooting in Aurora because someone who worked there had posted about it. It’s amazing—that site gets information faster than anybody.

Are you a fan of any particular subreddits?
Sometimes I’ll go to the “Get Motivated” subreddit just to get me off Reddit … There was one this morning that literally said, “Whatever you’re supposed to be doing right now, go fucking do it,” and I was like, “Aye aye, Reddit!”

What occupies you in the car?
I like to listen to This American Life in the car. There is something really soothing about it. They present stories in a way that’s not overwhelming, even if it’s really intense.

How do you listen to music?
I just got into Spotify. It’s a game-changer. Weirdly, I’m in this rut where I haven’t been listening to a lot of new music, so I’m actively looking for recommendations. I’ve been listening to comedy albums, like Paul Tompkins and Maria Bamford and Eugene Mirman, which is actually really fun when you’re getting ready in the morning. It totally gets me pumped for the day.

Are you a TV junkie?
Not really. I didn’t own a TV for years, so I almost forget that it’s available sometimes. But there are certain shows that I’ll obsess over. I finally just watched all of Girls straight through. And I’m a big Game of Thrones fan.

How do you wind down at bedtime?
I’ve been reading this book, Sex at Dawn, which is fascinating but dense. It’s about sexual anthropology, and it was recommended by Dan Savage, who I adore.

Give us the skinny on your favorite app.
You know what somebody just got me into? Snapchat! It’s totally for teenagers to send each other dirty pictures, but I use it to send my friends ugly faces throughout the day. I spend so much time trying to look nice and smile and never take an unflattering photo that there’s something deeply satisfying about making the ugliest face I can make, and knowing that somebody is going to see it for five seconds.

What’s your biggest digital indulgence?
I got my house done so that I can control everything from my phone, which is kind of dorky but really fun. And probably a lot more money than I should have spent for stuff that I could do with wall switches.

With such a bloated media universe, how do you cut out the fat?
I’ll let you know when I figure it out.

Craig Robinson Grows Horns, Rob Corddry Grows a Moustache in Exclusive ‘Rapture-Palooza’ Pics

When the stakes are high — like, Armageddon high — the clean-shaven look won’t really cut it: what you need in any apocalyptic adventure is a moustache. And lo and behold, Rob Corddry dons one hell of a nose neighbor in these new, exclusive pics from Rapture-Palooza. Corddry’s character Mr. House teams up with his son Ben (John Francis Daley) and the film’s heroine Lindsey (Anna Kendrick) to take on the formidable force of the Anti-Christ… played by none other than Craig Robinson, Corddry’s Hot Tub Time Machine compadre.

These images depict Robinson in truly hellish form: covered in blood, sprouting horns, and spreading propaganda via cheap posters. Check out the pics, and catch Rapture-Palooza in theaters and VOD on June 7. {hollywood.com}

New Role! Anna Joins ‘Wish I was Here’

Wow. This girl is going to be buu-sy! She just joined Wish I Was Here, a comedy by Zach Braff. Anna plays Janine, a young woman into Cosplay who is the love interest. Sounds perfect for Anna!

Anna Kendrick Joins Zach Braff’s ‘Wish I Was Here’ Kickstarter Movie

The “Pitch Perfect” star joins recently cast Mandy Pantinkin and Josh Gad in the film.

Anna Kendrick is set to join the cast of Zach Braff’s “Wish I Was Here,” which has been made possible by Kickstarter.

Kendrick will play Janine, a young woman into Cosplay who Braff’s brother, played by Josh Gad, becomes smitten with.

Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg are among the producers. Worldview Entertainment recently came on to provide gap financing and executive produce.

Kendrick recently starred in the hit comedy “Pitch Perfect” and will soon be seen in “Rapturepalooza.”

Kate Hudson, Zach Braff Now Starring Together In Kickstarter Movie ‘Wish I Was Here’

Kate Hudson and Zach Braff are now starring together in Braff’s Kickstarter movie, “Wish I Was Here,” joining Many Patinkin, Anna Kendrick and Jim Parsons on the crowdsourced project funded by Kickstarter contributions from public donors.

Kate Hudson is set to star opposite director, Zach Braff, in his new indie movie, Wish I was Here, funded entirely from Kickstarter donations, reports Deadline.

The Kate Hudson-Zach Braff combo will be as wife and husband, reportedly, with Hudson set to star as Braff’s character’s wife and mother to his two children. Mandy Patinkin and Josh Gad will play his father and brother, respectively.

Anna Kendrick, of Twilight fame, and Pitch Perfect, is also featured in the indie flick, as well as Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory.

Zach Braff’s co-star on the television show “Scrubs,” Donald Faison, will also appear in the indie film. The two stars of “Scrubs” are best friends forever in real life and play as such on the sitcom.

The Kate Hudson-Zach Braff film, Wish I Was Here had set a goal of $2 million for fiinancing the project, which is set to expire in three days. So far, they’ve raised over that goal, collecting $2,707,334 with time to spare.

Zach explained why he decided to finance his new indie production, and follow-up to his indie hit with Natalie Portman, 2004’s Garden State, with public donations, saying on the film’s Kickstarter page:

“I was about to sign a typical financing deal in order to get the money to make “Wish I Was Here,” my follow up to “Garden State.” It would have involved making a lot of sacrifices I think would have ultimately hurt the film. I’ve been a backer for several projects on Kickstarter and thought the concept was fascinating and revolutionary for artists and innovators of all kinds. But I didn’t imagine it could work on larger-scale projects. I was wrong.”

After Braff saw the incredible way Kristin Bell and series creator, Josh Schwartz, used Kickstarter get Veronica Mars film made, Braff decided Kickstarter was the easiest way to finance his newest independent film with final cut his own.

Braff’s film, Wish I Was Here is, according to Braff himself “the story of Aidan Bloom (played by me), a struggling actor, father and husband, who at 35 is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life. He and his wife are barely getting by financially and Aidan passes his time by fantasizing about being the great futuristic Space-Knight he’d always dreamed he’d be as a little kid.”

After the money runs out for his kids’ private school, Aidan decides to homeschool them where the hijinks begin as he takes a less-than-traditional approach to their education.

You can still donate to the Kate Hudson Zach Braff film for the next three days, and then the next time you see it will probably be at a small independent theater near you.

Zach Braff’s Kickstarter Campaign Passes $3 Million as Kate Hudson, Anna Kendrick Join His Film

Zach Braff has reason to be excited.

The Kickstarter campaign that the actor set up to raise funds for his latest film project, Wish I Was Here, passed the $3 million mark today, the final push perhaps spurred on by the likes of Kate Hudson, Anna Kendrick and Jim Parsons joining the cast.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you. I won’t let you down! Lets do this,” Braff tweeted after getting the good news.

The campaign is now closed to further donations and…it’s moviemaking time!

Braff tweeted nonstop yesterday about approaching the milestone, his missives ranging from”UK, when you look at the page 3 girl’s boobs today, think of me. K?” to “Whomever pledges the last $ will get sex from Kate Upton. (Note: this is a lie.)”

The former Scrubs star took a lot of flak at first for taking to Kickstarter in the wake of the overnight success of the Veronica Mars movie campaign, but obviously enough people were taken with his idea to overcome the critics.

In addition to the kindness of strangers, Braff will also be putting his own money into the project and the success of his Kickstarter venture prompted Worldview Entertainment to offer up gap financing.

Mandy Patinkin and Josh Gad have also been cast in Wish I Was Here, in which Braff will play a young man forced to reconsider his life and family after he learns his father is dying.
